Back in the second issue of Machine Man 2020 in 1984, a futuristic 2020 version of Iron Man known as Arno Stark, a distant removed cousin of Tony, was created by Tom DeFalco & Herb Trimpe. In 2013 Kieron Gillen & Dale Eaglesham debuted the regular Marvel 616 version of Arno Stark who wasn’t the Iron Man 2020.
Next year is 2020, and it seems at long last Iron Man 2020 will be a full on reality within the 616 universe.
A teaser drawn by In Hyuk Lee and shared by Comicbook.com, and it features a new version of the Iron Man 2020 armor (similar to the God Killer armor that debuted last year) standing in the rain over a grave for Tony Stark where a human hand is jutting out of the grave.
Despite coming back from the grave fairly recently, as a brand new artificial copy of his former self at least, Tony Stark’s future doesn’t seem as bright as one might have expected. The solicitation for December’s Tony Stark: Iron Man #19 is not only the finale of the Ultron storyline currently running but also seems to tease a grim fate for Tony again.
Whether Arno, who has been working with Tony’s rival Sunset Bain during the entire run of thise current series, will don armor or not and play some part in the future is unclear. The Arno Stark/Iron Man 2020 of the past stories was not a hero, he was a mercenary that engaged in corporate espionage and that isn’t far from the morally ambigous nature of the present day Arno.
More announcements about Tony, Arno, and Iron Man 2020 seem likely perhaps during the upcoming New York Comic Con or at least by the time the January 2020 solicits drop later this month.
