Things have been relatively quiet on the footage front when it comes to December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, following the spring time release of the film’s first teaser trailer. Attendees of the Disney D23 conference were treated to a footage reel that featured mostly a montage to the series as a whole but contained some nuggets of new footage for the final film of the Skywalker saga.
Now that footage has officially been released online.
There are flashes of numerous heroes and villains and fleets and beloved characters, but one thing that stood out, easily verified by even a curoursy scan of social media, is the image of Rey seemingly having a dark turn. Clad in dark robes she shows off a pretty cool dual red bladed lightsaber that can extend into a lightsaber staff very similar to Darth Maul’s.
Emperor Palpetine seemingly fits into this film in some way meaning Rey’s turn could be anything from a Force vision to her actually being turned or her pretending to be turned to get to Kylo Ren or any other number of things.
For the time being the scene serves the purpose of getting folks talking, and that seems to be working.
Directed by the returning J.J. Abrams, the film stars Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Daniels, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher. It opens on December 20.
