Brandon Routh & Courtney Ford are exiting Legends of Tomorrow in season five

As years go by things change & sometimes familiar faces move on to do other things. Change is something that has been baked into the DNA of The CW’s DC’s Legends of Tomorrow as the series has undergone lots of changes since its season one debut, and season five will bring more changes.

Changes that include the loss of two cast members.

As reported by Deadline, series regulars Brandon Routh (Ray Palmer/Atom) and Courtney Ford (Nora Darhk) are set to leave the series at some point in the upcoming fifth season. The real life married couple’s exit, their characters also being romanticlly linked, is said to stem from the creative decision to wrap their character’s storylines.

“I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to bring the big-hearted and humorous Ray Palmer to life for our fans over the last 5 years, but unfortunately, his storyline is pointed in another direction,” Routh said in a statement. “I’m saddened to see Ray’s journey end for now but wish my Legends family well.”

“Nora Darhk is very close to my heart,” Ford said. “If it were my choice, I’d play her for years to come. But I understand that stories run their course, and I’m grateful for the time I did have bringing Nora to life on Legends of Tomorrow.”

While Ford joined as a recurring character in season three before becoming a series regular in season four, Routh has been part of the series since the very first episode and made his debut in season three of Arrow. Routh’s Ray was a fan-favorite character and many times brought a sense of levity and humor to the series alongside Nick Zano’s Nate Heywood.

Previously other season one vets Victor Garber, Wentworth Miller, Franz Drameh and Arthur Darvill have departed the series in various ways through the past couple of seasons. Caity Lotz (Sarah Lance/White Canary) and Dominic Purcell (Mick Rory/Heatwave) will be the last remaining season one characters after Routh’s departure.

“Brandon and Courtney have been invaluable members of the Legends family,” series executive producers Phil Klemmer, Grianne Godfree and Keto Shimizu said in a statement to Deadline. “They have always brought a level passion and collaboration to their characters and to the show — both on and off the screen – that we deeply admire and for which we are eternally grateful.”

While there is no word at what episode point they’ll leave season five (they film their last episode reportedly in October), the season doesn’t begin till 2020, Routh will take part in the upcoming Crisis on Infinite Earths event not only as Ray Palmer but also returning to the cape and tights of Superman to play the Kingdom Come version of the high flying hero.
