When the Suicide Squad returns to the big screen in the next few years, they’ll have to be dealing with a lot of changes. David Ayer won’t be back for the sequel, replaced by James Gunn after the director was let go by Marvel last summer, and Gunn will be bringing in his own take to the series including new characters reportedly.
At least one character is sticking around but is also undergoing a bit of a change.
Exactly a week after news dropped that Will Smith bowed out of reprising the role of Deadshot in the sequel because of scheduling, it seems Warner Bros. has found their new actor for the role. Keeping the star power in the role, according to Variety, the studio is in talks with Idris Elba to become the new version of Floyd Lawton/Deadshot for 2021’s The Suicide Squad.
Elba, of course, is no stranger to comic book films, as he played the role of the all-seeing Asgardian Heimdall in all of the Thor films for Marvel Studios as well as appearing in a couple of the Avengers films including last year’s Avengers: Infinity War. His genre film resume also includes Pacific Rim, The Dark Tower and this summer’s Fast and the Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw.
There is no firm word on who else will join Elba in the film, but it’s been rumored and reported in the past that Margot Robbie likely will return as Harley Quinn after playing the character in the first film as well as the upcoming Birds of Prey film.
The Suicide Squad currently has an August 6, 2021 release date.
