Grab a pen and mark it on your calendars, Aquaman is swimming back to a theater near you in the very near future.

That’s right, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. has revealed that the sequel to Aquaman will arrive on December 16, 2022. So far this sequel has no competition as no other films have laid claim to that date, but with the fight for release date real estate lately, that is sure to change.

While the first Aquaman originally was coming out in October, till it moved to December & its old date was snagged by Sony’s Venom, it makes sense for the studio to keep the film coming out around the same time of year after the first film crossed the billion dollar mark.

Ever since Disney laid claim to December for the first of their Star Wars films, The Force Awakens, in 2015 the landscape of film releases have seemed to dramatically shift. No longer is it only the summer for blockbusters and fall for more award show oriented films. Now there are major films dropping in December and February of all months, while some more serious fare that gains Oscar attention is coming out near the first part of the year.

Jason Mamoa is expected to return, and Amber Heard, Nicole Kidman, Temuera Morrison, and Willem Dafoe among others are likely to return as well in various capacities. Contracts are likely already in the process of being negotiated.

It was previously reported that director James Wan was returning as a producer for the sequel alongside Peter Safran, but it is unclear if Wan will take on the director role again or not. The duo is also working on The Trench spinoff that is a horror film focused on the deadly creatures that own the deepest depths of the oceans as seen during a few scenes of Aquaman.

This date grab makes Aquaman 2 the furthest out of DC films that Warner Bros. for certain has on the docket. There are numerous possible films in development but currently the only for sure ones are Shazam! on April 5, October 04’s Joker, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) on February 07, 2020, and Wonder Woman 1984 on June 6, 2020. Currently, The Batman and Suicide Squad 2  seem to have June 25, 2021, & August 6, 2021 release dates respectively but both are still in various stages of development so those dates could change.
