While the fate of the X-Men overall is up in the air as the dust still settles in the deal that has given almost all of Fox to Disney, the films that have run for years are not quite done. Following a few date changes and delays, X-Men: Dark Phoenix is at last on the way this summer and a brand new trailer for the latest X-film has dropped.

It still keeps a lot of the plot a mystery, focusing on what happens as this new power will overwhelm Jean.

There do seem to be some scenes that seem to echo the last attempt Fox made to do the Dark Phoenix storyline, 2006’s X-Men: The Last Stand, which is certain to be potentially divisive with fans in regards to that film. Dark Phoenix director/writer Simon Kinberg was the writer of that previous film, which could be part of why there are similarities.

In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Dark Phoenix stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Evan Peters, and Jessica Chastain. The film opens on June 07.
