While the title is still a secret, filming of Episode 9 of the main Star Wars saga is now complete

Everything to do with the ninth entry in the Skywalker Star Wars series is being kept under wraps, from the title to villains to where it will take the franchise next. What isn’t being kept secret though is that filming on the project is now complete.

Returning director J.J. Abrams dropped a photo featuring the trilogy’s new leads Daisey Ridley/Rey, John Boyega/Finn & Oscar Issac/Poe Dameron as well as a caption talking about how filming had recently wrapped up. In the photo the trio are hugging on a desert looking location, the crew still working in the back, indicating the series return to a desert-like planet perhaps even Tattooine itself.

Now begins the lengthy post-production process that will likely take till shortly before the film makes its debut in December.

Abrams of course directed the first entry in this trilogy Star Wars: The Force Awakens before leaving as Rian Johnson took over for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, only to return to replace ousted director Colin Trevorrow for episode nine of the series.

Boyega also shared the photo on his own social media, where he wrote: “That’s a wrap on Star Wars episode 9 and the end to a chapter of my life that I couldn’t be more thankful for. What a process! It really has been a joy to be in these movies surrounded by amazing people. JJ thank you for making my dreams come true.”

There is a lot of wonder surrounding this film because of many things including how it will handle the passing of Carrie Fisher in regards to General Leia, what happens to the Resistance following the dire end of the last film and where this will all go as the film wraps the trilogy. Boyega’s words echo some similar to Ridley about likely being done with the franchise with the end of this trilogy.

So far there has been no word if there will be any more entries in the main series while others like Johnson are developing stand alone trilogies and films that don’t focus on the majorly known characters, which also include the Jon Favreau led The Mandalorian Disney streaming TV series.

Star Wars: Episode IX stars Ridley, Adam Driver, Boyega, Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Kelly Marie Tran, Joonas Suotamo, Billie Lourd, Keri Russell, Matt Smith, Anthony Daniels, Naomi Ackie, Richard E. Grant, Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams, and Carrie Fisher. The film opens on December 20.
