A prevailing sentiment online the last few years is that Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. quickly became one of the best and most liked comic book/superhero related series after it changed things up with season four. After two very well received seasons, the Marvel Cinematic Universe series is ready to make a return this summer.

To prepare for the team’s return ABC has released the very first teaser trailer for the season which focuses on the new Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., the loss of Phil Coulson, the search for a missing friend, new villains and a familiar face in a very ominous new light.

That’s right, despite the claim at the start of the teaser and what we saw at the end of season five Phil Coulson is dead but maybe not so dead. A somewhat villainous looking version of the Clark Gregg played character appears at the end of the teaser. It’s not clear though if it is Coulson or someone pretending to be or using his face or a life model decoy or a Skrull or a million other comic book related possibilities.

Facing off against doppelgangers or possibly turned members of their gang is nothing new for the intrepid agents. Coulson’s possible return could have something to do with the mysterious new baddies the team is facing or even their adventures through space to find the frozen Fitz after the Fitz that came back from the future with them died heroicly at the end of season five.

Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns to ABC this summer for season six, with a seventh season the summer afterward already confirmed.
