After adding the likes of Crystal Reed (Abby Arcane) and Virginia Madsen (Maria Sunderland) to the cast, DC Universe’s upcoming Swamp Thing series has found the faces to become the title character. Yes, as most in the know about the character likely expected, two individuals will come together to bring the Swamp Thing to life.
Announced by DC Entertainment, Andy Bean (It: Chapter Two) has been cast to bring the human element of the character formerly known as Alex Holland to life, while Derek Mears (The Flash) will bring life to the Swamp Thing that Holland becomes.
Holland’s character description reads: “A passionate biologist, Alec Holland becomes caught in the crosshairs of a small town nightmare when he discovers a bizarre local illness may be connected to his work in the swamp. Holland’s discovery leads him into conflict with dark forces, from which he emerges as the elemental hero known as Swamp Thing.”
While the one for Swamp Thing reads: “Emerging from the swamp with a monstrous physique and strange new powers over plant life, the man who was once Alec Holland struggles to hold onto his humanity. When dark forces converge on the town of Marais, Swamp Thing must embrace what he has become in order to defend the town as well as the natural world at large.”
Most times Swamp Thing stories focus mostly on the swampy figure over Holland’s human time, but with Bean marked as a series regular it’s likely that we’ll get plenty of flashbacks or build up time with Holland. At least for the first season, as things could change should the show continue beyond that. Mears own face likely won’t be seen very often, but if it was DC adaptation fans would potentially recognize him as last season he played the size-altering villain Dwarfstar on The Flash.
DC Universe’s newest hero has been found, but also recently they found one of his antagonists. Will Patton (Halloween) was cast in the role of Avery Sunderland, a ruthless businessman and the husband to Madsen’s Maria Sunderland, according to DC Entertainment.
Sunderland’s character description reads: “as its most prominent businessman, Avery Sunderland serves as the de facto patriarch of his Louisiana hometown, always giving back to the community. His benevolent veneer, however, masks a ruthless determination to harness the power of the swamp for profit.”
Produced by James Wan (through Atomic Monsters) and written by Mark Verheiden and Gary Dauberman, Swamp Thing currently also stars Crystal Reed as Abby Arcane & Jeryl Prescott as Madame Xanadu and is set to debut sometime in 2019. It’s one of six (counting the already debuted Titans) original series set for the DC Comics-centric streaming platform.
