James Gunn reportedly set to write & possibly direct Warner Bros.’ Suicide Squad sequel

The former Guaridans of the Galaxy director could be leaping to the DC Comics side of things after Disney/Marvel firing

James GUnn

Marvel Studios definite big loss could very well be the big gain of Warner Bros./DC Entertainment. Just a few months after Disney caved to pressures from right-wing trolls and fired James Gunn, he could be heading or the DC Comics side of things.

According to The Wrap, Gunn is reportedly in talks with Warner Bros. to write and possibly even direct the sequel to 2016’s Suicide Squad. Also, the report states that Gunn would be coming in with a whole new take on the property, which focuses on DC supervillains recruited by the government to carry out the missions that the government would rather keep quiet and are too off the books for superheroes.

David Ayer handled the first Suicide Squad, and much like Batman V. Superman which came out earlier in that same year the film was not well received but did decently at the box office compared to most other superhero films. Gavin O’Connor had previously worked on a draft for the sequel and there had been reports that he was going to direct the film as well.

Gunn was hard at work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 03 for Marvel Studios, with production set to kick off at the start of 2019, before this summer some right-wing folks staged attacks on Gunn and other vocal anti-Trump Hollywood voices by digging up old offensive tweets from their past.

While Disney knew about Gunn’s tweets and he had publicly apologized years ago, back when Disney first hired him, the studio fired him right away.

After the way Suicide Squad was received, and because of it’s comparisons to Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s a smart move by Warner Bros. to recruit Gunn. Guardians of the Galaxythe original film, was one of the least looked forward to films by non-comic book fans before it came out in 2014 because it was full of very lesser known characters including a talking tree and raccoon. This, of course, was before Marvel Studios proved they can make almost any concept work on the screen, and before Gunn and company worked their magic.

Giving him the reigns for Suicide Squad 2 means he can work that magic and make the film one that people want to see as well as make it a must-see since it’ll be one of his big films after getting the boot from Disney.
