Death can’t keep a superspy & Avengers down for the count. Despite meeting her end during Secret Empire in 2017, at the hands of the Hydra version of Captain America, Natasha Romanova the Black Widow is back and leaping into her own solo series once more but with a new twist.
Making the announcement during New York Comic Con, and reported through Bustle, Marvel revealed that horror writing sisters Jen and Sylvia Soska will team-up with artist Flaviano to launch a brand new Black Widow series in 2019. While officially Natasha is still ‘dead’ after the aforementioned Secret Empire moment, she is back to deal with some unfinished business.
“This is actually a stand alone adventure for Natasha that focuses on her doing what she does best,” Sylvia said. “We’re taking Natasha to the baddest place on Earth in the Marvel-verse, Madripoor, where she’ll find the kind of villains that don’t deserve mercy. She’s back from the dead and she’s not happy about it. She’s looking to let off some steam in the most permanent of ways.”
As mentioned, Natasha’s mission will take her to the fictional island nation of Madripoor to hunt down and take out a crime syndicate that is abducting children who are ending up dead in videos on the dark web. Jen didn’t want to spoil anyone Natasha might encounter but said: “there will be familiar and new faces appearing throughout.”
Whoever is the head of this syndicate will have to watch out, because Natasha is back and not quite happy.
“Our Natasha will be true to the Natasha we all love,” Jen says. “But she is not in a good mood. You won’t see her feeling bad for putting more red on her ledger. She enjoys what she does. She’s damn good at it. She’s fearless. She’s lethal. She’s unstoppable. She’s the last person you want coming for you. Our Natasha isn’t following anyone’s rules so she’s completely unleashed.”
Black Widow #1 arrives in January.
