The DC Universe has its latest superhero. After announcing at San Diego Comic-Con that Geoff Johns would be writing and producing a series that will bring the character Stargirl that he helped create to the streaming service, DC Entertainment has now found their Courtney Whitmore/Stargirl.
The company has announced that their very first female-led superhero series for the platform (not the first on television for them of course) will star Nickelodeon School of Rock star Brec Bassinger in the lead role of Stargirl.
The series description reads:
Outside of costume, Stargirl is known as Courtney Whitmore, a young woman’s who’s described as smart, athletic and above all else kind. The high school sophomore’s seemingly perfect life hits a major speedbump when her mother gets married and her new family moves from Los Angeles, California to Blue Valley, Nebraska. Struggling to adapt to a new school, make new friends and deal with a new step-family, Courtney discovers her step-father has a secret; he used to be the sidekick to a superhero. “Borrowing” the long-lost hero’s cosmic staff, Courtney becomes the inspiration for an entirely new generation of superheroes. The series itself follows Courtney as she inspires that unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past, and aims to reimagine Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in what promises to be an unpredictable series.
“There is no other character in comic books more special to me than Stargirl, and after searching far and wide I can say there is no other actor on the planet that embodies her more than Brec Bassinger,” shared Johns, who’s also an executive producer and writing the first episode of the show. “Brec’s warmth, strength, humor, and positive energy are core to who Courtney Whitmore is. I’m so grateful she’s signed on for the role.”
Stargirl debuted in 1999’s Stars and S.T.R.I.P.E. #0 which was one of Johns first comics and the character of Courtney is inspired by his late sister who was killed in a plane explosion in 1996. Courtney had a very long run in the comics as a member of the Justice Society of America up till the universe was rebooted in 2011, appearing in that new world later as a member of the Justice League of America.
This isn’t the first time that Stargirl has been adapted outside of comics though as she previously seen in animation voiced by Giselle Loren & Natalie Lander in Justice League Unlimited & Justice League Action respectively and played in life action by Britt Irvin for Smallville years ago and most recently by Sarah Grey in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
Stargirl is the sixth original series for the DC Universe platform following the upcoming Titans series & its spinoff Doom Patrol, the animated Harley Quinn series, the revival of Young Justice and a Swamp Thing series.
The series has no premiere date yet but likely will arrive sometime in 2019.
