Long thought dead only to be revealed to be a secret cybernetic assassin of the Russians, Bucky Barnes, the Winter Soldier, has been on a long road towards redemption for the last few years. This winter that path will not only take him into his own series once more but on a new slightly different path.
Announced by Marvel, the new Winter Soldier limited series is from writer Kyle Higgins and artist Rod Reis and puts Bucky on a new mission where he works to help others forge their own ways forward no matter the cost, helping others find redemption. The long varied title run of Ed Brubaker & various artists initially brought Bucky back and it was specifically the Winter Soldier series by Brubaker that Higgins mentioned as inspiration.
“[That previous story] explored the pitfalls and emotional fall out of Bucky’s time as a weapon for the enemy and slowly took him on a journey to find redemption. He became Captain America. He spent time in the Gulag. He died to save the world. He sought to fix old wrongs from the Cold War. In many ways, Bucky successfully atoned for his sins.” Higgins said, noting this leads to the next logical step in Bucky’s journey. “He’s going to help others do the same thing. It’s Bucky’s way of channeling his own pain in a productive, personal way – by helping others find the redemption that he found.”
Reis not only is working in interiors but drew the cover for the first issue.
“To be able to work with a character that has such a rich legacy and striking visual identity is really exciting,” Reis said. “Taking Bucky forward and building a world unique to him – one that still respects his past – is an artist’s dream. I can’t wait for people to see what we’ve come up with.”
Winter Soldier #1 arrives on December 05.
