As the story of one Logan begins again with a return, the story of another heads towards a possibly grim conclusion. As reported by Newsarama, while Old Man Logan, the series starring a grizzled older Logan from an alternate timeline, comes to an end in October that’s not the end of the story for the character quite yet. Series writer Ed Brisson and artist Mike Henderson (who handled the character in Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan), colorist Nolan Woodard and cover artist Declan Shalvey will launch the final 12-part story of the character in November with Dead Man Logan.
“This is it. This is going to be the big, final Old Man Logan story,” Brisson told Newsarama. “Logan’s dying and still has a lot of unfinished business to attend to. Dead Man Logan will largely be Logan tying up loose ends – loose ends like Mysterio, the man who, in Old Man Logan’s timeline, caused him to kill all of the X-Men. That’s not a box that Logan’s going to leave unchecked.”
When the villains banded together and took over the world in the past of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s original Old Man Logan storyline in 2008, it was revealed that Mysterio was sent to deal with the X-Men and he used his special effects abilities to drive Logan mad and caused him to slaughter all of the X-Men. This led to him dropping the Wolverine name forever, trying to kill himself, but eventually just living out his life in the wastelands until his family was killed and he was pulled back into things.
“It’s a huge thrill to be involved in the last journey of a character so many people have invested so much in, and to be able to do it with Ed and colorist Nolan Woodard makes it that much more exciting,” said Henderson. “I’d been wanting to collaborate with each of them for some time so getting to work with them both at once seems like sorcery. I’m having a blast with these scripts and Nolan is already making me look good.”
The current Old Man Logan series has been dealing with the fact that this far older Logan is losing his healing factor, meaning every battle could put him one step closer to death.
“We’ve got lots of big battles and some crazy stuff in store,” Brisson said. “With a title like Dead Man Logan, it’s probably no surprise where we’re going. This one’s all about the journey.”
