The CW has found their caped crusader. Before possibly swinging into her own series in 2019, the network has plans for Batwoman to appear in their yearly crossover between a handful of their DC superhero shows, and now they found the actress to bring that character to life.
Australian actress Ruby Rose has been announced as snagging the role of Kate Kane/Batwoman for the upcoming crossover as well as the possible series. Rose has the action role chops after turns in films like XxX: Return of Xander Cage and John Wick Chapter 2 and other acting work in hits like Orange is the New Black and standing alongside Jason Statem in the upcoming giant shark film The Meg. Also just like Kane, Rose is openly a lesbian which is fitting as she’s taking on a role that would be the first LGBTQ superhero to headline their own live-action series.
Rose will be playing the Kate Kane version of the character, who, armed with a passion for social justice and flair for speaking her mind, soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence. But don’t call her a hero yet—in a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.
There is currently no word on the dates of the crossover which will feature in The Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl. Should the crossover & reaction to the character go over well, there are already plans for the solo adventures of the character led by The CW veteran Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries, Melrose Place, Smallville) with The CW DC guru Greg Berlanti production. That series could appear in 2019 or 2020.
