Sir Patrick Stewart officially confirms his Star Trek return with new Captain Picard series

Almost two decades after the last journey for the Next Generation crew, Jean-Luc Picard is making a return.

Confirming months of rumors and speculation, Sir Patrick Stewart is about to make it so once more. The veteran Star Trek actor made a surprise appearance at the Star Trek Las Vegas convention to drop the news that he will indeed be returning to the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard for a brand new Star Trek series for CBS All Access.

Stewart took to Twitter to post his statement from the convention.

That statement reads:

I will always be very proud to have been part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course. It is, therefore, an unexpected and delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him. Seeking out new life from him when I thought that life was over.

During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership. I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason – to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times. I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavor to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.

Captain Picard last appeared on a screen for 2003’s Star Trek: Nemesisthe final adventure for the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew after seven seasons on television (1987-1994) and four feature films (Generations, First Contact, Insurrection, Nemesis).

There are no other details about the series such as when it will air or who else might appear in the show or what Picard is up to, but that is all likely to begin dropping soon enough. This Picard show was last reported to be joining the current Star Trek: Discovery (the second season arriving in 2019) along with a potential Starfleet Academy, animated series and a series set around Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan all spinning out of a new deal with Alex Kurtzman who is producing the various shows.
