Just over a week since Disney fired director James Gunn from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 03, because of offensive tweets made by the director almost a decade ago that resurfaced, the main cast members of the previous two Guardians films Gunn directed have spoken out.
Taking to their social media accounts Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan, Michael Rooker, Pom Klementieff and Sean Gunn all shared the same open letter which they co-signed stressing the fact that they do not condone or defend the jokes that were made by Gunn in the past, but they do not agree with his firing by Disney.
Gunn’s tweets were not new news, they had previously been unearthed when the director was chosen for the Guardians job and he apologized for them at the time. These tweets were unearthed by conservative proponents of President Donald Trump who tend to deal in conspiracy theories, as Gunn has been a vocal opponent of the President.
At the time of the Tweets returning, Gunn posted a series of tweets in response:
“Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor. It’s not to say I’m better, but I am very, very different than I was a few years ago; today I try to root my work in love and connection and less in anger. My days saying something just because it’s shocking and trying to get a reaction are over. In the past, I have apologized for humor of mine that hurt people. I truly felt sorry and meant every word of my apologies. For the record, when I made these shocking jokes, I wasn’t living them out. I know this is a weird statement to make, and seems obvious, but, still, here I am, saying it. Anyway, that’s the completely honest truth: I used to make a lot of offensive jokes. I don’t anymore. I don’t blame my past self for this, but I like myself more and feel like a more full human being and creator today. Love you to you all.”
Disney has been mum about the firing of Gunn and the fate of the Marvel film since all of this went down, but the number of people that are against the move that the studio made continues to rise. Besides the Guardians cast and other vocal celebrities coming to the side of Gunn, a petition by fans to re-hire the director has passed the 300,000 mark and continues to rise towards a goal of 500,000.
The merger of Disney and much of Fox’s assets is big in the news, but at some point, the studio will have to address this rather large elephant in the room.
