Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn will no longer be part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Marvel Studios.
Following the unearthing of tweets that made jokes out of topics such as rape and pedophilia, Disney has officially severed all ties to Gunn, according to The Hollywood Reporter. These tweets were unearthed by conservative proponents of President Donald Trump who tend to deal in conspiracy theories, as Gunn has been a vocal opponent of the President.
“The offensive attitudes and statements discovered on James’ Twitter feed are indefensible and inconsistent with our studio’s values, and we have severed our business relationship with him,” said Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn in a statement.
Since the old tweets resurfaced, Gunn posted a series of tweets about those tweets: “Many people who have followed my career know when I started, I viewed myself as a provocateur, making movies and telling jokes that were outrageous and taboo. As I have discussed publicly many times, as I’ve developed as a person, so has my work and my humor.”
