The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles dropped into San Diego Comic-Con as Nickelodeon debuted a brand new trailer for Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, along with a confirmed release date for the brand new series and a small sneak peek at the series in action.
Nickelodeon’s second Turtles series (following the recently ended Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) moves back to 2-D animation, over the last series more 3-D/CGI, and makes some changes to established TMNT lore to give things a new spin. This time all four of the turtles will be different breeds of turtles (snapping, red-eared slider, soft-shelled, and box), April O’Neil will be African American, the turtles will each have access to magical abilities and Raphael will be the oldest brother and leader rather than Leonardo. Also their weapons will change as Raph turns in his sais to carry twin tonfas, Leo takes up an ōdachi sword, Donatello gets a tech-enhanced bo staff and Mikey takes up a kusari-fundo.
Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles stars Omar Miller as Raph, Ben Schwartz as Leonardo, Josh Brener as Donatello, Brandon Mychal Smith as Michelangelo, Kat Graham as April, Eri Bauza as Master Splinter and John Cena as Baron Draxum. The series will debut a 26-episode first season on September 17 with a half-hour sneak peek airing on July 20 at 9:30 p.m. on Nickelodeon.
