Once upon a time in the DC Comics Universe, Hal Jordan was a space cop as a Green Lantern of Oa. While he remained that in a sense, the storylines that surrounded the DC hero began to get bigger and bigger with more at stake.

This November, Hal’s life is scaling back to that simpler time.

Confirming many internet rumors, it has been announced that Grant Morrison and artist Liam Sharp will be relaunching the main Green Lantern series at DC Comics this fall as simply The Green Lantern (replacing the recently ended Hal Jordan and the Green Lantern Corps series), according to IGN. Their take on the character returns to that smaller space cop roots.

“Instead of the big, epic, 12-part stories, we’re focusing down on the everyday life of a space cop. Basically, it’s no more apocalypse-ending storylines,” Morrison told IGN. “The basic concept is that [Hal Jordan] is like a space cop that patrols a sector of the universe where anything can happen. We’ve made it more like a police procedural.”

Hal’s first mission will find him coming across the crashed ship of a fellow Green Lantern who is dying and was transporting three dangerous criminals who have now escaped onto Earth and Hal must find them before they cause too much damage.

The previous book with Hal featured tons of Green Lanterns including three of the other five Green Lanterns of Earth, but that won’t be the case in the new series. This one is fully about Hal and any other Green Lanterns that will be seen will be new or long forgotten alien Lanterns with the Guardians of the Universe serving as the police chief types who appear but are not a major part of the story.

“He’s a loner and a drifter and he’s an unreconstructed man. It was nice to do that and to go a little bit old-fashioned with it,” Sharp said. “He doesn’t belong here at all, you know? He’s longing for the heavens, and to be back up as a Green Lantern.”

“We’re doing Hal Jordan where, you know he’s a good cop, but is he really a good guy?” Morrison added. “And we’re looking into his relationships and how he deals with people. And also the fact that, if you’ve got a job as a space cop, it’s hard to be stuck on the planet Earth. He has other lives on other planets. We’re gonna be looking into a lot of things that I don’t think we’ve seen a lot with Hal Jordan before.”
