The mystery of Marvel’s purple-hued “Blind Spot” teaser has been revealed, as indeed the company is launching a brand new Jessica Jones series. There is a bit of a twist though.

As revealed by IGN, the new Jessica Jones series from Kelly Thompson and Mattia de Lulis will be the first in a brand new digital comics initiative known as Marvel Digital Originals. These series will focus on various characters, like Jessica, who are appearing on any of the many Marvel Television shows.

“There’s a huge audience out there — not just on the Netflix front but on ABC, Freeform, Hulu, etc. — that experience these characters digitally,” Marvel editor Nick Lowe told IGN over email. “In fact, it was hard not to notice when characters like Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist were some of our biggest sellers in the digital marketplace. That was the inspiration for the Kaare Andrews/Afu Chan’s Iron Fists digital strategy and this next big step for us.”

Unlike print comics, these digital comics will all be 40-pages long, meaning readers will get a usually six-part story in three months rather than six, and the stories will still fit into the main Marvel continuity while still being new-reader friendly. Following their digital run, each series will subsequently be printed and sold in stores.

The recently launched Dennis Hopeless and David Messina Cloak and Dagger series will be now pulled into the Marvel Digital Original banner and three more titles are set to join the initiative after being announced on Saturday, July 21 through IGN Live during San Diego Comic-Con.

Until recently, Jessica had been enjoying a print comic run headed up by her co-creators Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Gaydos. Once Bendis wrapped the series before heading to DC Comics he had announced that there would be a woman taking over writing Jessica, which some had suspected would be Thompson.

“Kelly was actually suggested by Brian Michael Bendis, co-creator of Jessica, when he was wrapping the previous volume because he was impressed by her depiction of Jessica in Hawkeye,” Lowe said. “And Mattia de Iulis had the slick neo-noir vibe the team was looking for.”

Jessica Jones #1 is currently already available through Marvel and on Comixology. Check out the solicitation below.
