As Gwen Stacy’s adventures as Spider-Woman, a.k.a. “Spider-Gwen,” seemingly come to a close soon, the end might just be the beginning for the character.
Marvel has dropped a teaser image of the character most know as Spider-Gwen with a caption stating “Ghost Spider Debuts,” promising more information at their upcoming Spider-Man panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 20 at 12:30 p.m. PST. Gwen’s current series Spider-Gwen from co-creators Jason Latour and Robbi Rodriguez is ending with Spider-Gwen #34 but the teaser might indicate that her story is not ending but just changing.
Ghost Spider is the name that Gwen is going by in the all-ages series Marvel Rising, a series of comic books and a film titled Marvel Rising: Secret Warriors, and it seems that this will be the new name that sticks. Changing Gwen’s codename, if it is indeed Gwen, could be to match with Marvel Rising but also could be for another reason.
If Gwen is moved from her alternate universe of Earth 65 over to the Marvel Prime main universe, like Ultimate Universe member Miles Morales was, her name would need to change as there is already an active Spider-Woman on that Earth (Jessica Drew who is pals with Gwen) and Spider-Gwen was never her actual name but just one given by fans and others.
This is all just speculation, more will be revealed on July 20.
