Audiences have been clamoring to catch even a peek at what Zachary Levi will look as the big red-clad magical hero Shazam (previously known as Captain Marvel of course) on the big screen next year. There were leaked photos here or there but now Warner Bros. has finally given the first official look at Shazam!
Released by Entertainment Weekly, the photo shows Levi in costume guzzling down a soda standing next to Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman.
“I wanted to keep the shorter cape as a throwback to the original because that’s something that sets him apart from Superman or Batman,” director David F. Sandberg told EW. “It makes him feel a bit more Golden Age superhero, which is the vibe I’m going for.”
Based upon the Fawcett/DC Comics characters, Shazam! follows orphaned 14-year-old Billy Batson who finds a dying wizard, played by Djimon Hounsou, who grants him the ability to turn into an adult hero gifted with powers from six ancient heroes anytime Billy shouts out the word Shazam.
Shazam! stars Angel, Levi, Grazer, Hounsou, Grace Fulton as Mary Bromfield, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vázquez, Marta Milans as Rosa Vázquez, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, and Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana. The film opens April 5, 2019.
