Idris Elba reportedly in talks to play villain in Fast & Furious spinoff Hobbs and Shaw

Elba is seemingly ready to put on the villain cap once more to stand against Dwayne Johnson & Jason Statham next summer.

Hobbs and Shaw

Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham will have quite the challenge when they come back together for their upcoming Fast and the Furious franchise spinoff, Hobbs and Shaw. That’s because Johnson’s Diplomatic Security Service agent Luke Hobbs and Statham’s former villain turned sort of ally Deckard Shaw will take on Idris Elba.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Elba has signed on to play the villain in the buddy action film directed by John WickDeadpool 2‘s David Leitch. While many love Elba for his more heroic roles (Thor: Ragnarok, Pacific Rim, etc), this isn’t the first time he’s put on a villain cloak as he played the main villain for 2016’s Star Trek Beyond and in the acclaimed HBO series The Wire among other roles.

There are no real details about what sort of villain Elba will be as there haven’t really been any details about just what will bring Hobbs and Shaw back together after their last adventure in 2017’s Fate of the Furious.

This is the first of potentially other spinoffs as Universal and series star & producer Vin Diesel have agreed to end the series (at least that’s the plan) with the upcoming ninth and tenth films. The Fast and Furious franchise is one of Universal’s biggest money makers meaning more spinoffs or related films are likely to arise to keep the brand going.

Hobbs and Shaw arrives on July 26, 2019.
