As production has begun on Wonder Woman 1984, the sequel to 2017’s hit Wonder Woman, glimpses at the films main characters have begun to filter out. Following a look at Gal Gadot’s Diana/Wonder Woman and the mysteriously returning Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, it’s time for the villain side.
Director Patty Jenkins used her Twitter to reveal the first shot of Kristen Wiig as Doctor Barabar Minerva, the woman who becomes the deadly and villainous Cheetah. Minerva is seen in a museum in the shot, calling back to her comic book roots as an archaeologist who uses a ritual to gain immortality from the god Urzkartaga which instead turns her into the bloodthirsty Cheetah instead.
In the comics, Minerva is the third character to hold the Cheetah name as there were others in the pre-Post-Crisis era of DC Comics stories.
There are not a lot of details about the film other than the year it’s taking place, which leaps from the trenches of World War I to the Cold War era of the 80s. What brings Diana out of exile early (the previous films in the universe indicated that she mostly retired till the incidents of Batman V. Superman), how she crosses paths with Minerva/Cheetah and how Steve Trevor returns are the big questions that either the marketing, trailers or film will answer.
Wonder Woman 1984 opens on November 01, 2019.
