Following the universe-shaking events of their current crossover “Shattered Grid,” things are about to change for the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Beginning with issue #31 of the Boom! Studios comic this fall, a brand new creative team will tackle the next adventures for a team of Rangers.
According to ComicBook.com, writer Marguerite Bennett and artist Simone Di Meo will be taking over for current writer Kyle Higgins and artist Daniele Di Nicuolo, with the new team picking up in the aftermath of the epic crossover event.
“Even though I can’t tell you what’s coming, I’m really hoping to keep the momentum, vigor, and emotion of everything that Kyle has set up on this careening course into this whole new world of possibilities,” Bennett said. “I won’t lie it’s a dream come true. It’s such a cliché and so childish but so sincere, I can’t believe that I get to write for Power Rangers.”
Not only will the creative team change, but so will the team of Rangers in the series. Following the events of Shattered Grid, the series will no longer follow the stories of Jason, Kimberly, Zach, Trini, Billy and Tommy.
Instead, a new team made up of the Ranger Slayer (Kimberly from Lord Drakkon’s world), Magna Defender (Lost Galaxy), Tanya (Power Rangers Zeo), Cam (Ninja Storm) Andros (In Space) and a mystery Dino Charge themed Ranger.
“Well I guess, we can probably frame it from the standpoint of, there are things coming up in the finale of Shattered Grid that are going to make this new team of Power Rangers not only possible but necessary,” Higgins said
This will be the team of Rangers in the book for the foreseeable future, Boom! Studios’ second book Saban’s Go Go Power Rangers will be the place to see adventures of the original team of Power Rangers.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers took a look back at the original era of Power Rangers shortly after the Green Ranger Tommy Oliver turned from villain to hero, but put the series in a much more modern position than the original 90’s series. It has not shied away from making massive changes to the continuity that fans know from the 25 years of TV seasons, standing in its own parallel universe, something that will continue with the new team.
“I think Shattered Grid changes everything and I think that what you know, or what you think you know may not apply anymore after the end of Shattered Grid,” Higgins said. “I mean we’re literally sitting here talking about an arc coming up called Beyond the Grid that features an eclectic group of Rangers that is so freaking cool,” Higgins continued. “Like when have you ever seen that before? Everything we’re doing in the book and have built to through Shattered Grid has been about redefining Power Rangers and that’s why I’m so excited. I know what Marguerite’s planning and it’s epic, it’s beyond epic, it’s Beyond the Grid epic. She is coming in and is going to continue what we’ve been trying to do for the last couple years, which is being additive to the mythology and the legacy of Power Rangers.”
Higgins & Di Nicuolo final work will be for August’s Shattered Grid #1 issue, but Higgins will be working on the recently announced older Tommy Oliver focused Power Rangers: Soul of the Dragon graphic novel.
Mighty Morphin Power Rangers #31 arrives in September.
