Captain Marvel hires the first woman composer for a major superhero film

Marvel Studio's first woman led superhero film will come with another first for the superhero industry as a whole.

Marvel could have just made Captain Marvel its first female-led superhero film and just left it at that, but they didn’t. When Captain Marvel hits the screen next March it will do so accompanied by music from the very first woman to compose a score for a major superhero film.

Marvel Studios has turned to composer Pinar Toprak to score Carol Danvers big screen debut in 2019. This is not her first heroic outing though, as Toprak currently composes the score for SyFy’s Krypton and contributed on 2017’s Justice League. To many though her most famous work comes for the music she has composed for the massively popular game Fortnite.

Toprak made the announcement through Instagram, saying: “I’m so thrilled to finally announce that I will be scoring the upcoming CAPTAIN MARVEL! It’s an incredible honor to be a part of the Marvel Universe. So many thoughts racing through my head. And the main one is gratitude.  I have so many people to thank for helping me on this journey but first and foremost, my incredible agents Laura Engel and Richard Kraft for believing in me from day one and Dave Jordan and directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck for giving me this opportunity of a lifetime.”

The move continues to signify the wave of change moving through not only the superhero films but in many areas of the industry, where diversity is happening more and more in front of and behind the camera. There is still a long road to travel but each of these moments helps open the door to more and more people in the future.

Captain Marvel is the upcoming 21st film in the growing Marvel Cinematic Universe and leaps back into the past, the 1990’s, to show Carol Danvers as a hero that was protecting the world long before the Avengers was even a concept. Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel will take on the shape-shifting Skrulls as well as meet up with Kree characters like Ronan the Accuser & Korath the Pursuer (both villain in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy) as well as 90s era Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg).

The film arrives on March 8, 2019.
