Jake Gyllenhaal in talks to join Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel as a villain

After various superhero related rumors over the years, it looks like Gyllenhaal might instead bring to life a classic villain.

As the old saying goes, if you can’t be Spider-Man than you can fight Spider-Man. Okay, it isn’t an old saying, but it could be true for Jake Gyllenhaal.

After almost playing Spider-Man in 2002 after Toby Maguire suffered a back injury, Gyllenhaal is now reportedly in talks with Sony/Marvel to play the villain Quentin Beck/Mysterio for the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1964, Mysterio is a former special effects expert that begins using his craft to commit crimes after things go south in his life.

The untitled Homecoming sequel is set to release on July 5, 2019.
