Marvel assembles a brand new team of West Coast Avengers from Thompson & Caselli

Say goodbye to New York City, some of the Avengers are finally headed back for good old sunny California

Since the stories began, most of the Earth-bound action with Marvel Comics heroes has taken place in New York City where you can’t throw a bagel without hitting a superhero or a villain because there are just so many of them. At one point in the 80’s/90’s a group of heroes branched out and headed to sunny California to fight crime on the other coast.

In 2018, it’s time to head back to that coast.

Announced by Marvel, this summer Kelly Thompson and Stefano Caselli will launch a brand new version of West Coast Avengers, the secondary Avengers team from the 80’s, this time led by not just one Hawkeye, but two of them. That’s right, both Kate Bishop and Clint Barton will feature on this team that is made up of an eclectic mix of Marvel characters including Gwenpool, the X-Men’s Quentin Quire/Kid Omega, Kate’s boyfriend Johnny/Fuse and the multidimensional America Chavez/Miss America.

“They all need and want something from being on that team together. Kate needs to help save LA, and she needs help to do that because villains have taken notice that there are no Super Heroes out there,” Thompson said. “I think there’s part of her that misses [being on a team] too. She’s been doing her own thing, on her own, and that’s cool. But she was the one, who, with no powers, was like ‘I’m leading the Young Avengers, I’m the boss.’”

Because this is not just set to be nostalgia repeat of the original West Coast Avengers, this series will have its own modern twist. While the heroes will all be living together just like the old team, they don’t have Tony Stark-level funding so instead their living arrangements are paid for through them being part of a reality show as they live together.

West Coast Avengers #1 arrives on August 22.

HAWKEYE (KATE BISHOP). HAWKEYE (CLINT BARTON). A guy named FUSE. Never have they ever been called “the big three” of…anything. And now here they are, reunited for, okay, well, it’s only the second time ever. Thank god they also brought AMERICA CHAVEZ, GWENPOOL and KID OMEGA. Wait. What? That’s right, it’s the new West Coast Avengers, son. And you better hope they can figure out how to save the world because BIG things are headed for the West Coast.
