Those that were unable to get out to a comic book shop last weekend for the Free Comic Book Day festivities are somewhat in luck. While there were well over fifty free comics were available from various publishers, the big time offerings from Marvel Comics have already made the leap tot he digital realm.
Unlike the past couple of years where it took weeks for the books to arrive on the platform both Free Comic Book Day 2018: Avengers/Captain America #1 and Free Comic Book Day 2018: Amazing Spider-Man/Guardians of the Galaxy #1 are available on Comixology.
Many times the comics offered on FCBD are reprints of a publisher’s issues to entice people to check out and begin picking up the titles. Both of Marvel’s issues though are full of brand new content to set up a number of their relaunched titles.
The Avengers segment from Jason Aaron, Sara Pichelli, and Justin Ponsor features a meeting between Black Panther and the All-Father Odin that sets the stage for the recently relaunched Avengers series from Aaron and Ed McGuiness. Following it is the first look at Ta-Nehisi Coates & Leinil Francis Yu’s upcoming relaunch of Captain America, debuting a familiar villain being reframed as a brand new threat.
Marvel’s second book features the first look at Nick Spencer and Ryan Ottley’s upcoming run on the relaunched Amazing Spider-Man, as Peter struggles to find a new place to live with old roommate Randy Robertson and a familiar favorite villain of Spencer returns and complicates Peter’s life.
Lastly the Guardians of the Galaxy portion of the comic is not new content to set up a particular story, but it is set up for the summertime event Infinity Wars as it recaps everything that has happened since Gerry Duggan and a handful of artists launched All-New Guardians of the Galaxy/Guardians of the Galaxy last year and the follow-up series Infinity Countdown this year.
