It’s moving closer to that time of year where networks begin to make decisions on the state of their schedule for the future. Several prominent comic book related television series could be on the cusp of cancellation.
According to Deadline, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is one series that is currently on the bubble, meaning it could either get another season or it could see its story wrap up after five seasons. While the series is performing quite low when it comes to live ratings, it does very strongly with the DVR audience and is a strong international property for ABC Studios and Marvel which could help with renewal. It’s also the only Marvel-related property that ABC is likely to have in the near future as the very low-performing Marvel’s Inhumans is already considered dead.
On Fox, the X-Men related drama series The Gifted already gained a second season renewal late last year and prequel-Batman series Gotham reportedly seems set for another season. Hellish series Lucifer though, after gaining an early season three renewal last year, is another series that is on the bubble and could see it’s run come to an end very soon.
The future is seemingly bright once more for all the superhero series that have been rolled out by The CW over the years. All four veteran series The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow are facing very likely renewal as is midseason freshman series Black Lightning which has been a hit for the network.
Sophomore series Riverdale, based upon the Archie Comics characters, is likely to get another renewal as well, but The CW’s other comic book related series iZombie is on the bubble for its fourth season, being kept aloft by the fanbase that it has amassed over the years.
Most of the shows should find their final fates by May, as networks will be finalizing their 2018/2019 broadcast schedules by that point.
