A little over two months after signing onto Marvel Studios first female hero focused film, DeWanda Wise has officially exited 2019’s, Captain Marvel.
According to Deadline, her exit stems from a scheduling conflict that left her unable to commit to the Marvel film. Her role of Nola Darling on Netflix’s She’s Gotta Have It, based upon Spike Lee’s 1986 film of the same name, is the reason for the conflict at that series was renewed for a second season at the same time that Wise joined Captain Marvel.
At the time of Wise’s Captain Marvel casting, there was no word on who she would be playing. The majority of sites & fans, ourselves included, speculated that she seemed likely to be playing Monica Rambeau the hero that was also formerly known as Captain Marvel among other superhero monikers over the years.
There is no word on any possible replacements for Wise yet, but with the film set to go into production soon, a casting announcement is likely not far away. Outside of the inclusion of Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury and taking place in the 90s with the shape-shifting alien Skrulls, the rest of the film’s plot is being kept under wraps.
Captain Marvel stars Brie Larson, Jackson, Jude Law, Ben Mendelsohn and Gemma Chan. The film opens March 8, 2019.
