Lucasfilm is continuing to grow the pool of talent that will be working on their variety of Star Wars related projects. The studio has announced that Iron Man and The Lion King director Jon Favreau has signed on to executive produce and write a live-action Star Wars project that will debut on Disney’s upcoming streaming platform.
“If you told me at 11 years old that I would be getting to tell stories in the Star Wars universe, I wouldn’t have believed you,” Favreau said. “I can’t wait to embark upon this exciting adventure.”
As previously noted, Favreau’s history with Disney is extensive at this point from his work on the Iron Man films alongside some other work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to his work on The Jungle Book and more. Previously he also played roles in the Star Wars universe for Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the upcoming Solo: A Star Wars Story.
“I couldn’t be more excited about Jon coming on board to produce and write for the new direct-to-consumer platform,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy. “Jon brings the perfect mix of producing and writing talent, combined with a fluency in the Star Wars universe. This series will allow Jon the chance to work with a diverse group of writers and directors and give Lucasfilm the opportunity to build a robust talent base.”
Currently, the title, series focus and release date have not been revealed but it likely won’t be sometime until 2019 or 2020 as the streaming platform isn’t set to debut till sometime in 2019.
