Ahead of the series May relaunch, Marvel Comics has released a look at Stanley “Artgerm” Lau’s variant cover for Ta-Nehisi Coates & Daniel Acuña’s Black Panther #1. Lau’s cover features Shuri, Princess and former ruler of Wakanda and sister to King T’Challa, front and center.
Coates & Acuña’s series picks up on a storyline dropped in last year’s Marvel Legacy #1 that showed the interstellar empire of Wakanda, an empire that was inspired by T’Challa and the Earthbound version of Wakanda. This relaunch is part of Marvel’s Fresh Start initaitve that will see all their superhero series wrapping up and relaunched.
“Black Panther #1 is a creative challenge for me. My first few books were more philosophical, and while that still rings true here, this is a fast-paced, high-octane story,” said Coates. “And with Daniel Acuña’s art, I think people are really going to feel the energy and intensity here. I wanted people to feel like this is a really fresh storyline, and I think we succeeded in that. It’s meaty, it’s different, and it’s perfect for new readers just coming to the world of T’Challa and Black Panther.’’
Black Panther #1 arrrives on May 23.
