Because he’s never one to be outdone, the Merc with a Mouth has jumped in to be part of Marvel’s Fresh Start initiative that sees their superhero line of comics undergoing a relaunch. That’s right, Deadpool is getting a brand new series this summer.
Marvel announced that Skottie Young and Nic Klein will be taking over the stories of Wade Wilson in a new Deadpool series, as longtime writer Gerry Duggan and artist Mike Hawthorne are set to wrap up their run with the upcoming Despicable Deadpool #300 and with them longtime editor Jordan White will hand off the series to another editor.
“Deadpool’s gone through A LOT these past few years, and while he’s accomplished a lot, the merc with the mouth may have taken his eye off his mercenary business for a bit too long,” said series editor Jake Thomas. “So how does a soldier for hire get business back up and running? The only way Deadpool knows how: Maximum effort, reasonable rates.”
Marvel shared the full synopsis for the new series with Polygon:
Skottie Young and Nic Klein bring you the craziest tales of the regeneratin’ degenerate yet! It’s been a while since Deadpool’s had to merc to make ends meet, but things are tough all over. WhileDeadpool tries to get his humble mercenary-for-hire business back off the ground, a catastrophic threat so unfathomably huge, so mind-breakingly cataclysmic it defies description, is heading towards Earth, and there’s only ONE PERSON WHO CAN STOP IT!!!
Oh no, wait, it’s…it’s not Wade, is it?
Oh, ☠☠☠☠. It’s Wade.
Many will be familiar with Young based upon his artwork for Marvel and others that included his covers depicting various Marvel heroes as babies but he’s also written series including Rocket Raccoon and I Hate Fairyland that most definitely prepared him for Wade Wilson’s world.
“[Deadpool Fast is] fast-paced, big and humorous,” Young told Polygon. “I like to write stories that move fast and keep you on the ride. And I like to try and make you laugh while someone his getting their arm broken or head exploded. hahaha. Similar to my run on Rocket, I like doing shorter stories and have threads that weave in and out.”
Deadpool arrives on June 06.
