Captain Marvel gains a Fresh Start with a new origin retelling series in July

Carol Danvers joins the upcoming relaunch of Marvel's superhero comics as she takes a trip down memory lane.

Ahead of her big screen solo movie debut in 2019, Carol Danvers, the hero known as Captain Marvel, is ready for a series relaunch from Marvel Comics this summer as part of their Fresh Start initiative.

The Mighty Captain Marvel writer Margaret Stohl and artist Carlos Pacheco will launch The Life of Captain Marvel which will dive deep back into her origins all the way back to her childhood before flying and her powers, according to ABC News.

“This one is especially important to me,” Stohl said. “I relate to Carol Danvers so personally. And I really wanted to be able to do this and go back in before her movie launches.”

Stohl said the series is not a reinvention of Carol’s past but a retelling. Marvel’s official synopsis for the title reads:

Carol Danvers was just a girl from the Boston suburbs who loved science and the Red Sox until a chance encounter with a Kree hero gave her incredible super powers. Now, she’s a leader in the Avengers and the commander of Alpha Flight. But what if there was more to the story? When crippling anxiety attacks put her on the sidelines in the middle of a fight, Carol finds herself reliving memories of a life she thought was far behind her.

You can’t outrun where you’re from—and sometimes, you have to go home again. But there are skeletons in Captain Marvel’s closet—and what she discovers will change her entire world…This is the true origin of Captain Marvel.

The Life of Captain Marvel #1 arrives in July.
