Phil Coulson and his Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. just got to see the future of the Earth, a grim future in many cases with the world destroyed, but their very own future might be settled very soon. With Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. about to celebrate 100 episodes, the minds behind the series are hard at work preparing the season five finale which could also double as a series finale.
Speaking with TVLine, co-showrunners Jed Whedon & Maurisa Tancharoen revealed that they are working on the finale currently and are taking steps to make sure that should the series not be renewed their is closure for the characters and audience alike.
“Yeah, we’re ready for if this is the end. We’re definitely going to make it rewarding either way,” Whedon said. “We can certainly pivot and there are certain things that we’re putting in that at the last minute could be adjusted,” Whedon said. “But we know at the end we’re not moving off that mark. We’re going to do what we were planning to do, and I think that it’ll be thrilling either way.”
At this point, there is no word on if ABC will renew the series for a sixth season. The MCU television series has never been a giant ratings earner for the network, doing better as a DVR playback than live, but its fourth season was one of the highest rated once the series broke itself down into installments rather than a long drawn out season storyline like previous seasons.
Even though season five seems to be doing well with audiences, there is no guarantee that ABC will bring the show back as reportedly they tried to cancel it after season four but Disney stepped in to save the show for its current season.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. returns for its second chunk of episodes on March 02 with its 100th episode airing on March 09.
