James Gunn confirms Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 2020 release date

GOTG Vol 2

Beyond the five big films left on their schedule for phase three, three of which will have arrived by July of this year, the future of Marvel Studios cinematic universe is pretty unknown. While James Gunn confirmed in April 2017 that he would be returning for a Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a few weeks before Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 debuted, the timeline for when that trilogy conclusion would arrive.

Over the weekend though, Gunn confirmed a release date for the film in the form of a year.

Currently, Marvel has the dates May 1, August 7 and November 6 secured in 2020 for future MCU films.

That May date seems like a sure bet for Guardians third installment following the second volume also having a May release date. August could also work as the original film came out in August and surprised the number crunching types when it brought in a hefty box office after many thought it might be the first Marvel film to not hit with audiences. Turned out that emotional moments with a CGI raccoon and tree still affect people.

Previously in his announcement, Gunn stated that this third Guardians film would finish out his trilogy and also this iteration of the Guardians, suggesting there are plans to continue the franchise with a new crew or mix of characters going forward. Gunn also stated that he is working with Kevin Feige and the Marvel Studios crew to craft a Marvel Cosmic Universe that could see the birth of films featuring other Marvel cosmic inclined characters.

This makes a lot of sense especially following Feige’s recent revelation that the studio has at least 20 films planned to follow after the untitled Avengers 4 wraps up everything they’ve been building for the last decade. This Guardians sequel along with likely sequels for Black Panther, Captain Marvel and Doctor Strange take up some of those spots along with the 2019 Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel and reportedly that will have a third film as well down the line.

Seeing either some of the current Guardians go solo or characters such as Adam Warlock or Nebula or others go solo or join new cosmic teams in films is sure to delight many Marvel fans. With the purchase of Fox coming up, those cosmic stories might even soon be able to include Galactus, Silver Surfer, Skrulls and more.

There is still a lot that is up in the air about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which makes sense with all the films left in this phase, but at least now audiences know when they can go on the next adventure with the crew of the Milano.
