A lot of fans were understandably bummed that Star Wars: The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson would not be returning to direct Star Wars: Episode IX when it was announced Colin Trevorrow was leaving the project. The ninth main series film is going back to J.J. Abrams for directing, but Johnson is not even close to done.
As announced by Lucasfilm, Rian Johnson isn’t directing the ninth film because instead, he will create a brand new Star Wars trilogy with himself directing and writing the first of the films with his longtime collaborator Ram Bergman producing.
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi,” Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.”
This new trilogy will not be part of the ongoing Skywalker saga and will focus on new characters and new areas of the galaxy far far away.
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi,” said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”
There are no dates for this new trilogy but Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives on December 15.
