Disney star Asher Angel will soon get to live out the dream of most kids on the big screen, being able to magically transform into a superhero. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Andi Mack star has been cast in the role of Billy Batson who is the young man that can transform into the magical hero known as Shazam, played by Zachary Levi.
Casting for the next film in the DC shared universe of films, known as the DC Extended Universe by fans but not officially, has been ramping up lately which makes sense as production is set to begin in February for it’s April 2019 release. Levi was cast as the adult Shazam while Mark Strong is in talks to play the villain Doctor Sivana.
Just like in the comics, Shazam! will follow the young Billy Baston (Angel) who is granted the ability to turn into the adult superhero (Levi) by using the magical word Shazam which stands for the ancient Gods and heroes Solomon, Hercules, Atlas, Zeus, Achilles and Mercury from which the abilities of his hero form are derived. This power is granted to Billy by a Wizard who lives on the Rock of Eternity.
David F. Sandberg is the director for the film for New Line, where it’s been in various stages of development for years, well before the current shared universe even began. Shazam! is set to be the first official post Aquaman film in the shared universe, with many other planned projects still seemingly up in the air.
