When Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. makes it’s official return for season five later this year, it will do so with the team of agents officially being one person bigger. While she’s been around since the latter half of season three, Natalia Cordova-Buckley’s Elena “Yo-Yo” Rodriguez is being officially upped to a series regular for the new season, according to Deadline.
“Natalia is a powerhouse in her work and in her daily life, and she has imbued one of our favorite characters with her natural strength and humor,” executive producers Jed Whedon, Maurissa Tancharoen, and Jeffrey Bell said in a statement. “Natalia was instantly a part of the S.H.I.E.L.D. family the first day she walked onto set, and we’re happy she’s now an official member of the S.H.I.E.L.D. team.”
Based on a relatively new character from modern comics, Yo-Yo is an Inhuman with the ability to move at incredibly fast speeds in the time of a single heartbeat before “yo-yoing” back to the spot where she began. After meeting and helping the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents a few times in season three she moved to live her own life somewhat in season four, outside of secretly helping the on the run Daisy Johnson (Chloe Bennet), before events led to her being pulled fully back into the team’s adventures.
Over time Elena has grown a relationship with fellow agent Alphonso “Mack” Mackenzie (Henry Simmons), which was cemented when she was willing to sacrifice her life by staying in a collapsing virtual alongside him at the end of season four before both escaped back to the real world.
Near the end of 2016 the character starred in her own Emmy nominated six-episode digital series Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Slingshot.
Cordova-Buckley is expected to join the rest of her castmates and Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb on a season five panel during NYCC this weekend.
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. doesn’t have a release date but is expected to arrive sometime later this fall once Marvel’s Inhumans wraps up it’s eight-episode run.
