Those that are looking forward to the upcoming fifth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. might want to be sending some thanks to the house of mouse.
According to a report from Variety, ABC which has been the home of the Marvel Cinematic Universe set series since it’s debut wanted to bring an end to the series after its fourth season which wrapped earlier this year. Causing some friction is the report that the only reason that the series is coming back is because Disney stepped in and mandated that the show be renewed for another season.
This all comes as the network is already reportedly having some friction in their relationship with Marvel, both of them of course being part of the Disney family, over the critical and public poor reviews that have been pouring in for the upcoming Marvel’s Inhumans series, which debuted it’s first two episodes on IMAX screens earlier this month.
Depending on how the rest of the Inhumans series does, it beings airing on TV on Friday, and ratings of the Agents fifth season could determine the future of Marvel related series on ABC proper. Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. enjoyed a boost in ratings in season four after softer previous seasons, likely thanks to the fact that the show changed to have three distinct but connected chapters that focused on Ghost Rider, the LMDS and finally on the alternate reality world where Hydra ruled.
There have already been issues with Marvel shows on ABC with the cancellation of the fan favorite Marvel’s Agent Carter and the nixing of the Mockingbird and Lance Hunter starring spin off series Marvel’s Most Wanted.
With Marvel’s TV shows branching out soon to the likes of ABC Family and Hulu among other places, including the chance to put shows on the upcoming Disney streaming platform, it’s possible that the Marvel superheroes time on ABC could be coming to an end very soon.
