While most speculation seemed to point towards a 2018 release, Lionsgate has made it official that theirs and Millennium Films Hellboy reboot will arrive in theaters on January 11, 2019. The Neil Marshall directed film has just begun production.
Co-written by Hellboy creator Mike Mignola, the new film will be a departure from the two Guillermo del Toro films that came out in the 2000’s not only because they will stand apart from that continuity and create their own worlds but the new film will be R-rated to allow Marshall and crew to explore some darker and tougher stories than previously.
David Harbour is picking up the role of Hellboy from Ron Perlman and the first look at the actor in character has already hit the internet.
The road to production got a bit bumpy for the film after they hired actor Ed Skrein to play the character Major Ben Daimio, causing controversy because the character in the comics is Japanese-American and Skrein is not. Soon after the casting Skrein chose to step down from the film to allow for better representation and soon afterwards the studio chose Daniel Dae Kim to take over the part.
Hellboy also stars Ian McShane as Hellboy’s adoptive father Professor Trevor Bruttenholm/Professor Broom, Sasha Lane as Alice Monaghan, Penelope Mitchell as elder witch named Ganeida, Dae Kim as Ben Daimio and Milla Jovovich as the main antagonist Nimue/The Blood Queen.
