Ed Skrein steps down from Hellboy role following whitewashing issues

Ajax

Shortly after Ed Skrein was announced in the role of Major Ben Daimio last week for Lionsgate & Millenium’s Hellboy reboot, the internet quickly took note of an issue. In the comics Ben Daimio is a Japanese-American character.

With a spotlight falling heavily on films lately for Hollywoods continued trend to whitewash films by placing white actors in roles that are of other races in the source material, Skrein took to Twitter to announce that after finding out about Ben’s comic book race he has officially left the film.

No recasting or news has come from the studio, and likely won’t for some time. Hellboy creator Mike Mignola took to Twitter to thank Skrein.

Starring David Harbour, Ian McShane, Sasha Lane and Milla Jovovich, Hellboy is expected to arrive sometime in 2018.
