In 2015 Marvel Comics’ creators Natacha Bustos, Brandon Montclare, and Amy Reeder created Lunella Lafayette who not only is now the smartest character in the Marvel Universe but has joined a group that features the likes of Miles Morales and Kamala Khan as some of the publisher’s most enduring new modern characters. When creating Lunella the creative team & publisher paired her up with the Jack Kirby created character Devil Dinosaur and when her series joins Marvel Legacy this fall it will tap into more parts of Marvel that Kirby helped create.
As reported by Nerdist, November’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #25 will feature Lunaella teaming up with Johnny Storm the Human Torch and Benjamin Grimm the Thing, the last two members of the Fantastic Four, in a new storyline titled “Fantastic Three.”
“I always tried to connect Lunella Lafayette to Kirby himself,” Montclare said. “And I like to think of The Thing as the closest thing to Jack in the comics. It isn’t an accident that Lunella lives on Yancy Street, the home of Ben Grimm and the fictionalized neighborhood where Kirby was a kid. And then she has a strong tie to Mr. Fantastic, with Reed Richards passing the torch of Smartest There Is. So getting to tell a story that pulls her closer to the Fantastic Four–in the story but also spiritually–is going to be fun.”
The love of the Kirby co-creations is one shared by Montclare’s collaborator.
“It’s inspiring,” Bustos said. “The characters of Kirby are amazing, I feel very honored to draw them. Ray-Anthony Height did a great job introducing The Thing in issue 14 and I hope to do it as cool as him.”
“Fantastic Three” storyline will also feature Silver Surfer, Galactus and others including the a tease from Montclare about the possibility of a fourth member joining the three characters.
“I don’t want to spoil what we’re building in the current ‘Girl-Moon’ arc. But Moon Girl, like The Thing and Human Torch, are longing for a complete family. And the three of them, now together, maybe don’t quite get there. But who–if anyone–could possibly make four?”
