Over the summer Avengers: Infinity War was a big topic of conversation as a a small trailer for the third Avengers film was shown at Disney’s D23 Expo and San Diego Comic Con. While that film doesn’t come out till May 2018, it’s 2019 sequel is already ready for attention as well.
Directors Joe and Anthony Russo posted an image to their Facebook page to announce the start of filming for the still untitled Avengers 4, after having recently wrapped shooting on Infinity War. A purple glove with four fingers against a back drop is accompanied by the caption “Beginning the end.”
The caption of course can stand for many different endings.
With news that Josh Brolin is coming back in the fourth film as Thanos the ending could refer to the conclusion to Thanos long arc as a villain in the MCU. Originally Infinity War was a two part film that was changed to two stand alone films, but there appears to likely still be some carry over between the two films.
This film is also likely to be the true conclusion to the third phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, paving the way for a fourth phase that is reportedly going to be very different in the way it’s structured compared to the previous three phases. There is also the very likely notion that this film will be the beginning of the end for many of the beloved MCU characters.
Contracts are coming up to completion soon for many of the heavy hitters and with focus being moved over to younger and newer heroes in the recent films it’s likely that Marvel will either move on from some heroes (possibly killing them in the film) or reducing their appearances to more supporting/cameo level going forward.
Avengers 4 will likely have a giant cast just like Infinity War with Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Cumberbatch, Samuel L. Jackson, Evangeline Lilly, Karen Gillan, Anthony Mackie, Tom Holland, Zoe Zaldana, and Dave Bautista and others either confirmed or likely to return.
