With filming slated to start in September, Lionsgate’s planned Hellboy reboot has added a pretty big piece of the cast.
Ian McShane (Ian McShane) will be joining the film in the role of Hellboy’s adoptive father Professor Trevor “Broom” Bruttenholm, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The role was one that was held by John Hurt in Guillermo del Toro’s Hellboy and Hellboy II: The Golden Army in the early to mid 2000s.
Directed by Neil Marshall (The Descent), Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen stars David Harbour (Stranger Things) in the title role and will have the hero taking on a medieval sorceress who is set to wipe out humanity.
The new film will completely depart from del Toro’s films which starred Ron Perlman, and seemingly will follow the lead of Spider-Man: Homecoming and other films like it in skipping over the origin story of a character who has already had films in the past. Since Hellboy might not be a familiar to many in the general audience, compared to someone like Spider-Man, there could be flashbacks in the film to fill in the origins.
Filming begins in September and will take place in the UK and Bulgaria. There is no news on an intended release date but with filming starting so soon it’s likely shooting for a 2018 or early 2019 release.
