Warner Bros. Animation, DC Entertainment and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment laid out their slate of upcoming animated films during a panel at San Diego Comic Con, including the two-part adaptation of one of the most iconic Superman stories.
The animated offerings of 2018 will kick off with an adaptation of the Brian Augustyn and Mike Mignola graphic novel Batman: Gotham by Gaslight which will be followed by the original film Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay before Warner Bros. finishes off 2018 and begins 2019 with the two-part feature length adaptation of Death of Superman and Reign of the Supermen.
Batman: Gotham by Gaslight is described as “an adaptation of the popular 1989 tale that introduced us to a Victorian Era Dark Knight who was in pursuit of Jack the Ripper.” Because the original source material is only 48-pages, the release states that the film will offer an expanded version of the original tale.
Because 2014’s Batman: Assault on Arkham (featuring the Suicide Squad) was set in the Arkham video game series continuity, the original film Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay is said to be the first film for the Squad set in the DC Universe Original Movies’ shared continuity. The voice cast is being kept secret for the time being.
Death of Superman will round out the 2018 releases and is the first part of the two part film series, adapting the iconic story of Superman’s fatal battle with Doomsday. Of course this not the first time that the story has been adapted into animation as 2007’s Superman: Doomsday presented a greatly condensed and altered version of Superman’s death and return.
This new film is said to be a faithful adaptation of the source material, meaning it will be less condensed and will offer more familiar moments from the comic pages. This could include other DC characters like the Justice League getting beat down by Doomsday and other similar moments that came as part of the big story.
Part two of the adaptation will arrive in 2019 and will cover the Reign of the Supermen portion of Superman’s death saga where four individuals that all claimed to be Superman desecnded upon Metropolis to fill the void of the departed hero. While there are no details we likely will see Cyborg Superman, Steel, Superboy and the Eradicator just like in the comics.
Since it’s a two part film it is like that all the stuff that came with Cyborg Superman and Mongal and Coast City and Superman’s eventual return will be condensed down or dropped all together to fit into this second film.
