One thing that has been a constant in the last few seasons of FXX’s Archer, is the creator’s willingness to completely reinvent the premise of the show while maintaining the characters that are loved by fans. When the series returns for it’s ninth season in 2018, it will undergo another reinvention.
Announced during a San Diego Comic Con panel, the film noir style Archer: Dreamland will be followed by Archer: Danger Island which will take the characters and stick them on an island together, according to Entertainment weekly.
“Last season, we loved it, but things got pretty dark, pretty fast,” said Executive Producer Matt Thompson. “And [Archer creator] Adam Reed had talked about just doing something that’s fun and just having a blast with this season. So we basically stuck all these people on this tiny volcanic island, and we’re just going to have as much as fun as we can, with quicksand, cannibals, super intelligent monkeys, and a volcano, and a talking f—ing parrot.”
Thompson said the new season will take place in the spring of 1939 and will follow the eye-patch wearing seaplane pilot and semi-functioning alcoholic Sterling Archer (H. Jon Benjamin) who is “drinking, screwing, gambling, and generally bumbling around French Polynesia with a smart-ass parrot named Crackers.”
All of the regular cast will take on new or altered roles for the season. Aisha Tyler (Lana Kane) will play a princess, Jessica Walters will return to playing Sterline’s mother Malory Archer who is a bar owner, Amber Nash will play a version of Pam who is Archer’s sidekick and co-pilot, Judy Greer (Cheryl Tunt) will play the heiress Charlotte who came to the island for a honey moon but her husband fled after catching her sleeping with Archer, Chris Parnell (Cyril Figgis) will play a German intelligence officer posing as a breadfruit explorer and Lucky Yates (Kreiger) will be the voice of Archer’s parrot Crackers.
While it wasn’t stated, it’s likely that this season is much like season eight in that it’s a coma dream of Archer’s as he clings to life following being shot multiple times in the finale of season seven. Season eight ended without answering the question of if Archer will wake up anytime soon.
FXX previously renewed the series for three seasons which will take it to season 10 in 2019, and that is expected to be the final one for the long-running series.
