While the initial focus for The Walking Dead comic series was to present a zombie movie that doesn’t end, to show what happens to a society in the long run during such an apocalypse, the end of the series is on the way.
As reported by MoviePilot, creator Robert Kirkman confirmed during a San Diego Comic Con panel that he has plans that will bring an end to the Image Comics series.
“I think about two or three years ago, I had a pretty good idea for a definitive ending,” he said. “I have known that since then and been working towards that, so I know exactly where I’m going and what’s gonna happen when I get there.”
Kirkman said how it ends is being kept top secret and he hasn’t told anyone or even written the ending down anywhere just to keep it safe. There is no given date for the end but the ending is something Kirkman has been building to for some time.
“There was an ending I had in mind that I was thinking, ‘Oh, this would be kind of a cool ending.’ I got to a point where it should’ve happened and I was like, ‘I’m not done yet,'” Kirkman said. “And this was before the show. It got to a point where I would’ve had to start building to it and I was like, ‘Nah.’ So, I just threw that out and then I just kept going because I had all kinds of cool stuff I wanted to do.”
As for why the series will be coming to an end, the longevity and popularity in a way have a part in that.
“It’s actually more difficult to write The Walking Dead than its ever been because we’ve done a lot of stuff,” Kirkman said. “To be able to top yourself, and keep things fresh, and keep things interesting… It gets harder and harder and harder as you go. Knowing what the end game is and working towards that, makes it a little bit easier.”
After 14 years, starting back in 2003, and 169 issues it makes sense that the story will need to come to an end while it’s still strong and popular, rather than ambling on till it decays and withers like the zombies in it’s pages.
While the comics might be ending, that doesn’t mean that the television shows that have spawned from them are in danger of ending. It’s likely that at some point AMC will bring the zombie drama to an end, but it could easily outlive it’s printed inspiration.
